Now, dont let this distance put you off, as a lot of people are pleasantly surprised to find a really efficient bus service running from Girona Airport to Barcelona city centre. And the best part is, that the buses run to coincide with the arrivals and departures of Ryanair flights, so there will always be a particular bus assigned to your flight.
It is a good idea to check the bus timetable, before you take to the skies, so that you can organise your travel itenary.
When you land at Girona Airport, go to the 'Baggage Reclaim' area on the ground floor, and you'll see a counter called 'Barcelona Bus'. This is where you buy the tickets for the connecting bus to the city. A single ticket costs about 12 and a return ticket 21.
After you grab your luggage, head for the exit, and cross the road to the waiting buses, where the bus driver will help you with your baggage. Then hop on the bus and sit back and relax.
This is a really pleasant journey through the beautiful Catalan countryside and for many people it's their first glimpse of Spain, so even if you are exhausted from the flight, you might find it hard to sleep, with such stunning sights to keep you awake.
Keep your eyes peeled on entering the city and you might even get a glimpse of La Sagrada Familia, Gaudí's greatest achievement and Torre Agbar - you'll know this one when you see it. It's a large bullet-shaped skyscraper that reflects different colours from its 4,500 windows!
The journey itself takes about an hour and a half depending on traffic and you will eventually end your bus journey at Estació del Nord Bus Station.
To continue your onward journey to your hotel, you have the option of getting a taxi from outside the main entrance of the station, or you can get the underground.
Arc de Triomf Metro Station is the about a 5 minute walk from the station, just exit the main door, take a left, continue to the end and take a right down Avinguda Vilanova. The metro station is at the end of this street on the right hand side. It is located on the red line 1, which will connect you with the underground system and bring you to all corners of the city.
Your return journey to Girona Airport will leave this same station. But make sure to be there on time (again, check the timetable) and also have your ticket before getting on the bus. Also double check that you are getting the right bus i.e. the one that runs to Girona Airport and not Girona town!
A lot of people hire a car at Girona Airport, so they can explore the all the nooks and crannys of the gorgeous Costa Brava. If you are travelling to Barcelona by car from this airport, exit the airport onto the AP-7 the Autopista del Mediterrani. Remember to bring some euro's as this is a toll road! When you get nearer to Barcelona, look for signs for C33 road. This will bring you to the Ronda Litoral, which is the ring-road of the city.If you have experienced this journey to the Barcelona, we would love to know how you found it. Or if you are flying to Girona Airport, come back and let us know of any tips that you picked up.
